Cloze tests on verbal forms

 

Here you will find a series of quizzes which have been used over the years for evaluating basic verbal skills of first-year students of English as a foreign language. Virtually all essential verb tenses are tested here and only when the student finds these tests easy should he or she be considered at an intermediate level.

Fill in the blanks. Use an appropriate verb tense and correct word order. Base your answer on the words in brackets.

Rose and Ronald (know) each other for six months. They (fall) in love the moment they met. At first Rose's mother (not-like) Ronald because she (think) he was lazy. Now she (think) he is wonderful because he (repair) her television set. Rose and Ronald (meet) at a party. Ronald asked Rose " (want) to dance?" Rose said yes. While they (dance) Ronald asked Rose to go out with him. Rose asked "Where (we-go)?" Ronald replied that he (like) to take her to a restaurant. So the following evening they (eat) at a nice place down on the waterfront. At the restaurant Ronald asked the waiter if they (can-have) some champagne. They talked about their interests and (find out) that they many things in common. Rose plays the piano and Ronald (learn) to play the violin. They both have difficulty in (read) music. They (take-may) a course together to overcome this problem. On Saturday nights they look forward to (practice) together.
